The co-founder of ScoopWhoop, Suparn Pandey, was booked for sexual harassment and assault, after a former senior executive from the online news portal lodged an FIR against him at Vasant Kunj police station on March 28.

Officers said that the matter is being probed and the allegations are being ascertained.

According to senior police officers, a case under IPC sections 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 509 (Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), and section 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation) was registered based on the employee’s complaint.

“As stated by the victim in her complaint, the co-founder of the company had been sending her obscene texts, footages and videos on phone as well as on the e-mail, for long. She also alleged that he publicly made obscene and insulting comments about her. She has further claimed that the man made several attempts to approach her physically. Based on her complaint, an FIR was registered and the matter is being looked into,” said a senior police officer.

Despite repeated attempts, the complainant, as well as the accused, could not be contacted.

In a statement released after the incident, the company said, “ScoopWhoop strongly condemns any kind of harassment at the workplace. We work towards ensuring a safe and secure workplace for all our employees and take every complaint of harassment extremely seriously.”

The statement further read, “In line with workplace laws, ScoopWhoop has an Internal Complaints Committee (ICC). The ICC consists of two of our most senior and experienced women employees and an independent observer who has served on ICC panels across various prestigious and international companies. Forty per cent of our workforce is women and we have equal representation in senior leadership positions. We have taken every step to ensure the complainant gets a fair hearing and that we are following the rule book on workplace harassment.”

The statement also mentioned that the victim’s complaint was forwarded to the ICC immediately on its receipt and the same is being inquired into as per law. “The company is adhering to the rules and regulations set forth by the Hon. Supreme Court of India and the law of the land against sexual harassment at the workplace and the investigation is ongoing,” it said.

“As an FIR has also been filed separately by the complainant, and the police investigation is under way, we are extending full cooperation to the police. We are fully prepared to accept the findings of the investigations and dutifully take the necessary action if the accused is found guilty,” it added.
