National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has summoned two senior police officials over the case of a Dalit woman and her teenaged daughter being allegedly molested and thrown off a running bus, leaving the girl dead.

"Taking a cognizance of the recent incidents, the Commission has asked Additional Director General (ADG) Crime and ADG Law & order of Punjab police to be present in front of the Commission with reports of action taken over incidents against the victims," Vice-Chairperson of the commission, Raj Kumar Verka said.

Besides the Moga incident, the commission has taken note of other similar cases recently in Tarn Taran, Jalandhar and Khanna also, the vice chairman of the Commission said.

"Cases of harassment of Dalits are at its peak in Punjab. Especially the incidents with the girls are disgraceful," he said.

"In all of these incidents, accused are somehow associated with ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)," claimed Verka. "The law and order in Punjab is in poor condition and citizens especially Dalits are not at all safe. They are being targeted here," he said, adding, "police are not taking action against influential accused."

"Now the Commission is itself keeping an eye on such police personnel," he said. The commission has also asked Moga district Magistrate to submit a report over the issue, he said.

Meanwhile, Punjab State Commission for Scheduled Castes has extended a relief of Rs 5 lakh to Moga incident victim's family on the basis of a report submitted by ADG Crime.
