A kidney transplant scam whistleblower, Jamaluddin Khan (40), who has been battling an acute kidney ailment since 2016, was finally discharged from the SL Raheja Hospital on Thursday after undergoing a kidney transplant three weeks ago. He ultimately found a suitable donor within his family.

However, the cost of the kidney transplant is high as although his family managed to arrange Rs 3 lakh for the surgery, they are still running pillar to post to arrange for the remaining sum through the Chief Minister's fund.

Khan was diagnosed with a chronic kidney disease in 2016 due to an autosomal dominant polycystic kidney— a genetic disease that runs in the family. Doctors had told him that a kidney transplant was necessary or else he would have to remain on dialysis for the rest of his life. That is when a member of the Zonal Transplant Authorization Committee at JJ Hospital and a transplant coordinator from SL Raheja Hospital asked him for a bribe. Khan immediately informed ACB officials about the scam.

Speaking about Khan's health now, Zakir Hussain, his brother, said, "He is recovering well. While the doctors have asked him to take rest for six months, he is plans to resume work soon. We managed to arrange the fees for his operation by borrowing money from friends and relatives. We have applied for the CM's relief fund, and are hoping the authorities will sanction the same."

Dr Nilesh Rangnekar, Urologist & Transplant Surgeon at SL Raheja Hospital, said, "The patient is in a stable condition now. His transplanted kidney is functioning normally."
