Welcoming the Supreme Court verdict which upheld the Bombay High Court order allowing women into the inner sanctum of the Haji Ali shrine, activist Trupti Desai of the Bhumata Brigade called it as a “historic” victory for women and also the Indian constitution. She also announced her plan to take the Sabarimala case in Kerala to its logical end.

Desai, who has been fighting against gender bias at religious places, celebrated the victory by cutting a cake in Pune, and told DNA, “This is a historic movement for all of us at Bhumata Brigade. Apart from blessings at Shani Shingnapur and Trimbakeshwar, now we have blessings at Haji Ali also.”

Desai added, “We had requested the Haji Ali trustees to follow the High Court order delivered in August and provide women equal access to the sanctum santorum, especially since the Shani Shingnapur and Trimbakeshwar temples had done that. However, they refused to do so. Now they have agreed to abide by the Apex Court order.”

Desai said once she receives the order of the Supreme Court, she would go to the Dargah in south Mumbai to seek blessings.

When asked about her plans for the Sabarimala temple in Kerala which restricts entry of women in the menstruating age, Desai said, “We are reaching Sabarimala in the end of November. The trustees of Sabarimala have not responded to our written request to end the discrimination. But we would like to meet them to convince them that they must take a cue from the Haji Ali verdict and lift the ban. If they don’t agree, we will start our campaign Bhumata Brigade style.”
