SC orders police reforms

The Supreme Court on Friday directed a slew of measures for reform of the police force in country that includes a minimum tenure for director generals of police, inspector generals of police and senior police officials.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday directed a slew of measures for reform of the police force in country that includes a minimum tenure for director generals of police, inspector generals of police and senior police officials.
 
A bench headed by Chief Justice of India YK Sabharwal directed the National Human Rights Commission and the government to consider suggestions given in a public interest litigation filed by former DGP Prakash Singh, to transfer cases of terrorism, drug trafficking, money laundering to the Central Bureau of Investigation within four months.
 
A police complaint authority should be established in which complaints against police officials could be filed, the bench observed.
 
Besides a police establishment board should be established to fix the minimum tenure and selection procedures for police officials, it added.
 
The judgement came on a PIL filed by the former DGP seeking police reforms.
