Four senior-most judges of the Supreme Court today said the situation in the top court was "not in order" and many "less than desirable" things have taken place.
Holding an unprecedented press conference, Justices J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, M B Lokur and Kurian Joseph said they had met Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra in the morning and "raised issues affecting the institution".
Justice Gogoi, next in line to become the CJI, said, "It is the discharge of a debt to the nation that has brought us here. We think we have discharged a debt to the nation by telling you what is what."
From legal fraternity to politicians, people expressed shock at the development with many saying that this would shake people's trust in the judiciary. Many citizens took to social media to share their opinion.
Here are some of the reactions on Twitter:
First the RBI, then the EC, and now the SC. Disintegration of democracy at work #SupremeCourt

Here's what will happen to the #SupremeCourt issue. It'll be trivialised by dangerously ambitious sycophants, failing, out of work celebrities, mobsters masquerading as journalists, etc. They'll deploy whataboutery, try and confuse people using online streams and TV debates.

Justice is not in danger when undertials languish in jails for decades or 2G Scamsters get away but when a set of judges do not get to preside over lucrative high profile cases. Figures #SupremeCourt

Since 2014, #SupremeCourt interfering in Govt functioning, Hindu Festivals etc. Did we say Judiciary dictating? They rejected Kashmiri Pandits, hold Ram Mandir, stopped Rohingyas Deportation. What is this? Why Half of SC Judges haven’t made assets public 10 yrs after resolution?
