India is home to highest number of child brides in the world, with a latest study saying that every third child bride is an Indian.
In a stark reminder of this fact, a forced marriage of a Hyderabad teen has been reported by media today.
According to reports, a 16-year-old Hyderabad girl was allegedly married off to a 65-year-old Omani citizen by her aunt.
In her police complaint, the girl's mother Syeeda Unnaisa alleges that her sister-in-law and her husband colluded to get the nikaah done at a hotel in Hyderabad.
She says despite her protest, her daughter was married off to the sheikh and her sister-in-law's husband arranged for passports etc.
"The sheikh is saying he had bought my daughter for Rs 5 lakh. He said this was paid to Sikander. Only if this amount is paid, he said he would send my daughter back to India," Unnisa said in the complaint lodged with the Falakunuma police.
"If you don't save me and take me from here, I will die..." the girl has reportedly said in phone messages to her parents from Muscat, an NDTV report said.
