Heavy rains lashed several parts of the national capital on Saturday, causing waterlogging and traffic snarls on major intersections in the city. Delhi received 61 mm of rainfall since Saturday morning and weather experts predict the downpour to continue on Sunday.
As a result, the Rashtrapati Bhavan cancelled the Change of Guard ceremony. "The Change of Guard Ceremony on the Forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan will not be held today (September 1, 2018) due to heavy rain in New Delhi," the President's House tweeted.
According to the Delhi Traffic Police, motor movement was affected on Mathura Road, Shershah Road, Mathura Road to Bhairon Road, Purana Quila Road, Bihari Colony, Maharashi Raman Marg, Teen Murti Lane, 11 Murti and Girdhari Lal Goswami Marg (near the post office) due to excessive waterlogging. The Traffic Police tweeted alerts to inform motorists of which routes to avoid. A bus broke down on Delhi-Noida Road towards Ashram and brought vehicular movement to a halt.
"Lajpat Nagar market, Pant Nagar bus stand and IP Marg near the police headquarters were flooded. Motor movement was closed both ways on Bhairon Road," said a cop.
"This happens every year," said Kushal Rana, a resident of Geeta Colony, "Why do the authorities act only when the entire capital is in a mess? The drainage system should be overhauled completely."
Streets were flooded near the Civic Centre at Minto Road and also in Civil Lines area, nearly submerging cars. "Roads under Modi Mill Flyover, Rao Tula Ram T-Point, Rajghat, Janpath, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg to Lajpat Nagar market on Ring Road, Inderprastha Marg near the Police HQ, Rajendra Prasad Rd, GT Karnal Rd, Minto Rd were flooded," he added.
