The mystery surrounding former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa's death turned murkier with her long-time aide VK Sasikala and her personal physician Dr Sivakumar differing over the sequence of events leading to her hospitalisation on September 22, 2016.
Dr Sivakumar, in his affidavit filed before the Justice A Arumughasamy Commission which is probing the circumstance leading to Jayalalithaa's death, has mentioned that he had got a call from her aunt Sasikala around 7 pm about Jayalalithaa's suffering from a cough and cold. But Sasikala's 99-page affidavit did not mention about the phone call made to Dr Sivakumar, who is also the brother-in-law of TTV Dhinakaran.
Jayalalithaa who was admitted in Apollo Hospital on September 22, 2016, died on December 5 after a 75-day long stay in the hospital.
After the call from Sasikala, Dr Sivakumar said that he reached Amma's Poes Garden residence around 8.45 pm from his residence at Neelankarai on East Coast Road. He said that he had asked for a nebuliser (a device to send more oxygen into the lungs) as Jayalalithaa had some breathing troubles.
Both Sasikala and Sivakumar also differed on how Jayalalithaa fainted. Sasikala said that she was with Amma (Jayalalithaa) at around 9.30 pm when she walked to the bathroom to brush her teeth and felt giddy. Citing that she helped Jayalalithaa to walk to her cot, sat her down, she said, "I sat next to her. Suddenly, she fainted and slid upon my shoulder. At that time, Sivakumar entered the room."
Dr Sivakumar, however, said that he had asked her aunt to accompany Jayalalithaa to bathroom but she went alone. He added that when she returned from the bathroom, "she fainted and slid on him and Sasikala". He said that he immediately called up Apollo Hospital for the ambulance.
