Prime Minister Narendra Modi today unveiled the 'Statue of Unity' in Gujarat's Narmada district on the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

The Prime Minister had reached Ahmedabad on Tuesday and was welcomed by Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, Governor OP Kohli, Minister of State for Home Pradeepsinh Jadeja and chief secretary JN Singh upon his arrival at the airport.

Today, PM Modi will reach the Kevadiya Colony near the Sardar Sarovar Dam in Narmada district to unveil the statue around 9:30 am, an official press release said.

"We bow to the great Sardar Patel, the stalwart who unified India and served the nation tirelessly, on his Jayanti," PM Modi tweeted hours before the event:

Here are 10 key facts about world’s tallest statue:


1: The Statue of Unity is built by Larsen & Toubro ltd at the cost of Rs 2,989 crore.

2: With height of 182 meters, the Sardar Patel statue is 100 times larger than the average person.

3: Total height of Sardar Patel statue is double than New York's Statue of Liberty.

4: The world’s tallest statue has been completed in shortest time.

5: There are 2 high-speed elevators in the statue's base that can accommodate 200 people at one point of time. The elevators will be used to take the visitors to the chest of the statue for the viewer's gallery

6: Around 2,000 photos of Sardar Patel were studied by the sculptor to get every detail right.

7: The statue can withsatnd winds of 180 kmph and mega earthquakes measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale

8: To make world's tallest statue, 135 metric tonne of iron was collected from many villages across India.

9: A 3-star hotel, a museum and an audio visual gallery have been built by the Gujarat government centered around the statue.

10: The state government is also in process of building a 3.5 km long highway so that visitors can reach the statue.
