Four members of Sarabjit Singh’s family — an Indian prisoner on death row in Pakistan — were on Saturday granted visas to visit him at a hospital in Lahore where he is in a coma and on the ventilator. He was evacuated from prison and taken to the hospital after he was assaulted by fellow inmates inside the prison. According to doctors he is responding to some stimuli at times, but no surgery can be conducted on him till he stabilises.

A medical board has also been constituted at the hospital which consists of the medical superintendent, general and neurosurgeons. The hospital is also conducting several tests including X-ray, MRI and CT scans. The doctors are carrying out trauma control and are waiting for his condition to stabilise before going ahead with further tests.

Officials of the Indian high Commission are also at the Jinnah Hospital in Lahore and are in constant touch with the medical board which is attending to Sarabjit Singh. Some news channels reported that a team of Indian doctors might visit Lahore to assist in Sarabjit’s treatment though this could not be independently confirmed.

Sarabjit’s family had on Friday appealed for visas to visit Pakistan and be with him. The Pakistan High Commission Saturday granted visas to his family to go to Lahore and visit him. India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) facilitated visas for Sarabjit’s family members.

Sources told agencies that Sarabjit was attacked by at least six other prisoners within his barrack in one of the most secure sections of Kot Lakhpat Jail. He was hit on the head with bricks and his face, neck, and torso were cut with blade and pieces of a ghee tin.

Sarabjit was initially taken to the hospital within the prison. When his condition worsened, he was moved in an ambulance to Jinnah Hospital.

However, a murder case has been registered against two prisoners, Amer Aftab and Mudassar.
