Sarabjit Singh’s lawyer Awais Sheikh on Saturday exuded confidence of securing his release from jail and uniting him with his family before Pakistan goes for elections in March this year. “Sarabjit Singh’s release has now become a focal point for improving relations between India and Pakistan. It has now become imperative for both countries to improve relations for economic reasons. I am confident of his release before Pakistan goes to polls to elect next government in March this year. It is the best confidence building measure (CBM) that Islamabad can offer to New Delhi,” said Sheikh.

Sheikh is on a 15-day goodwill visit to India to generate awareness among the public about hundreds of prisoners who are languishing in jails even after completion of their sentences in two countries. He was speaking at the Press Club of India where his book titled Sarabjit Singh - A case of Mistaken Identity was officially launched by former Supreme Court judge and chairman of the Press Council of India, Justice Markanday Katju.

The book takes a deep peep into Sarabjit Singh’s case and establishing how he became a victim to mistaken identity and was handed death sentence without a proper trial. Sarabjit Singh’s family maintains that he mistakenly crossed over to Pakistan border on August 30, 1990 and was arrested for being allegedly involved in Lahore and Faisalabad bomb blasts. He was handed over death sentence on November 3, 1991 by a trial court.

Holding the mindset that cropped up because of the two-nation theory responsible for the animosity among people of two countries, Katju said it is high time for the countries to release prisoners who have completed their sentences or have been arrested and jailed on flimsy grounds.
