In a major breakthrough, police on Monday night arrested the main accused in connection with the the female foeticide case, after at least nineteen aborted female foetuses were found dumped in Maharashtra's Sangli district on Sunday.

Sangli police, while investigating the death of a 26-year-old woman following the medical termination of pregnancy (MTP), unearthed remains of 19 female foetuses, some 500 metres from Mhaisal village near Miraj in Sangli distric

"The doctor BA Khidrapure was arrested late on Monday night. He will be produced in Miraj court on Tuesday afternoon," said Dhiraj Patil, Deputy SP, Sangli.

However, Patil refused to reveal more details about the investigations.

The accused Khidrapure holds a Bachelor's degree in Homoeopathy and he is a resident of Shirol town's Kanwad village. He had been allegedly aborting female foetuses for the last 10 years.

The woman's husband, identified as Praveen Patangrao Jamdade is under arrest. Jamdade had taken his wife to the hospital for abortion as she was carrying a girl child for the third time.

When it was found that the woman was dead during abortion, the doctor said her condition was critical and shifted her to the city's prestigious hospital, where she was declared dead upon arrival.

However, to hide the matter, the victim's husband took the body to Manirajuri to perform her last rites, but the villagers suspected some foul play and refused to cremate the body.

After the post-mortem, the victim's angry parents cremated the body in front of the husband's residence on March 3.
