As the ruling Trinamool Congress prepares to observe Samhati Divas or Communal Harmony Day on December 6 to mark 25 years of Babri Masjid demolition, members of the minority cell of Trinamool Congress expressed their dissatisfaction alleging that the responsibility to organise the event was initially given to them but later shifted to the youth wing of the party.

“We were told that we would be organising the event on Mayo Road near Gandhiji’s statue and we had begun preparation about a month ago but recently we were told that it would be put up by the Youth TMC,” said a senior leader of the minority cell.

He also said that a lot of sheen had been taken off the event as it had been merged with several issues. “This year it is especially important as it completes 25 years of the demolition of Babri Masjid. People had taken out marches with hoardings in order to spread awareness and urge people to assemble at the venue on the day but the hoarding which people carried said the issue had been clubbed with others such as implementation of GST and intolerance of the Central government,” he added.

Another minority cell leader said that there is hardly any picture of any minority leader in the hoardings. “The pictures are that of Mamata Banerjee and youth president Abhishek Banerjee who are not minority leaders. It is a big day and a day of mourning for members of the minority section and that is not represented in the hoardings. It will end up being another event of Modi-bashing by the TMC leadership,” he said preferring anonymity.

TMC minority cell president and party MLA Haji Nurul Islam however, maintained that there was no problem in organising the event. “It depends upon the party supremo Mamata Banerjee who decides which cell would organise it and this time it is the Youth TMC which is doing it along with the minority cell,” he said talking to DNA. Asked about the photographs of Mamata and Abhishek, he said, “Mamata’s photos are always there on all hoardings according to protocol and Abhishek is the youth wing chief so what is wrong in it since the youth wing is organising the event. We have been working according to the instruction of the party,” he told.
