Zainab Begum prayed for full night at revered Ashmuqam shrine for Salman Khan’s acquittal in the hit and run case. For the 75-year-old widow, Salman had brought a ray of hope for a better life after years of impoverishment.

Come Wednesday, all her hopes were dashed to ground. Zainab and her extended family of six people are again at the crossroads. Cries and shrikes rent the air when the court pronounced the verdict against Khan.

Since morning the family has not eaten anything and is in a state of shock. Zainab had heard about the philanthropic work of Salman and therefore she along with her two granddaughters went to meet him at his hotel during the shooting of Bajrangi Bhaijaan in Pahalgam. However, initially she was not allowed to meet. Desperate for help, she stopped Salman’s vehicle prompting the actor to alight and meet the widow.

“After listening to our woes, he promised all help. He promised to pay Rs50,000 outstanding power tariff. He also promised to construct our house. In fact some truckloads of bricks, stones other construction material had already been unloaded here,” said Gowhar Ahmad, grandson of Zainab.

Ahmad had dropped out after clearing class XI because of poverty. His three younger sisters too dropped out since their father died of an accident leaving them without any support.

“We have no income to sustain. But Salman had given us a hope. He promised a job for me. In fact I worked for couple of days with his shooting crew. He had promised to take me to Mumbai for job,” said Ahmad.

A pall of gloom has descended on Ahmad’s family with family praying for the bail of Salman Khan. “We found Salman Khan an extremely down to earth human being. When he met us he put his hand on our heads and promised help. He behaved as a commoner and not as superstar. I can’t express my feeling. We have not had anything since morning,” said Khalida, granddaughter of Zainab, who met Salman Khan at Pahalgam.

Family is so depressed that they feel that they have been orphaned again. “It was our misfortune that Salman was convicted. Otherwise we had hoped for better days after suffering in silence for years. We pray that he gets bail because our future is hinged with the actor’s fate,” said Khalida.
