Mohammed Saifullah, the 23-year-old alleged Islamic State-inspired terrorist spoke to his elder brother Khalid for 70 minutes, who reminded him of his liberal upbringing and tried to convince him to surrender but to no avail.

The conversation revolved around how their parents taught them to be tolerant towards other religions. Khalid also reminded Saifullah that he could even recite the Gayatri Mantra (a Hindu chant).

As the encounter between Mohammed Saifullah and the UP Police went on for 13 hours in Lucknow, the cops tried everything, including an emotionally charged conversation that would drive him to lay arms, but nothing worked. The “highly radicalised” Saifullah insisted that he was on a mission for which he will get shaahdat (martyrdom), a Uttar Pradesh Police officer told DNA.

“This was our last effort to make him surrender thinking he will change his mind but it did not work,” Javeed Ahmed, UP Police chief told this newspaper.

“The conversation went on for an hour and 10 minutes. Saifullah talked a lot but in the end refused to surrender,” he added.

Describing, Saifullah as completely “brainwashed” and somebody who had gone “berserk,” a police officer said nothing could convince him.

His brother also told him that their parents will not be able to live with the fact that their son was a terrorist.

“A traitor cannot be my son. "We are Indians. I was born here, my ancestors were born here," said Sartaj Ansari on Wednesday hours after hearing about his son’s death. The dejected father also refused to take Saifullah’s body.

Saifullah had informed his family that he got a visa for Saudi Arabia and would be leaving for the country soon. Saifullah had left home recently as his father was unhappy with him for not getting a job.

Before getting Saifullah’s brother to make an emotional plea to surrender, the UP Police claims to have made all efforts to catch him alive. Tear gas shells and chilly bombs were fired so that he comes out, but it did not work.

The Anti-Terror Squad commandos finally stormed the house where was living and gunned him down.

Saifullah is alleged to be part of a self-motivated terror module inspired by ISIS that is alleged to have planted bombs on train from Bhopal to Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh. It is suspected the bomb was assembled in the Lucknow house where Saifullah was staying.
