Cop killed for confronting Neta who harassed his daughter.
General secretary of the Amritsar unit of the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal, Ranjit Singh Rana, was arrested on Thursday along with his accomplice for gunning down a police assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Ravinderpal Singh after the latter objected to harassment that the two accused had been causing to his daughter in Amritsar.
This is the second time that the ruling SAD has come under fire for a heinous crime. Earlier, in Faridkot, the party leaders were accused of shielding a teenage criminal who had abducted an adolescent girl at gun-point.
The ASI was allegedly shot dead by Rana near the Chheharta police station in Amritsar on Wednesday after he stopped him and his accomplices from molesting his daughter.
The girl called her father, who was on duty at the nearby Gharinda police station, for help. As the ASI arrived on the scene he was shot in the leg by the accused. The accused reportedly also pointed his pistol at the girl, but incidentally he had run out of bullets. Rana reportedly rushed back to his home and returned with his rifle to shoot the ASI.
According to reports, the prime accused Ranjit Singh Rana had been teasing the ASI’s daughter for quite some time and she had told her family about it.
The incident took place just close to the Chheharta police station, but the police took half an hour to arrive at the scene.
The delay gave the assailants another chance to strike and kill the injured ASI, said an eyewitness. The SHO of the police station has since been suspended.
Punjab Pradesh Congress committee president Amarinder Singh has condemned the “brutal killing of an ASI while trying to prevent two Akali goons from harassing his daughter”. He blamed an Akali minister Bikram Singh Majithia, brother-in-law of deputy chief minister Sukhbir Badal, who is also the state home minister.
Warning chief minister Parkash Singh Badal against pushing the state towards lawlessness and the jungle raj, he asked him, “better tame Bikram Majithia who has constituted a brand of criminals and is rewarding them with party posts”.
He said, the ASI could have been saved had the Akali goon and his associates not attacked him again while he was being taken to the hospital. “The accused even fired at the police that went to arrest him”.
