The Assam government on Monday said the attack on Congress MLA Rumi Nath and her second husband Jacky Zakir at Karimganj on June 30 was being investigated.

"We have ordered a probe and following the incident the duo were brought to the state capital Guwahati with police escort", Assam Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain told the assembly on behalf of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.

The government, he said, was seized of the matter and appropriate steps were being taken.

"Full protection have been provided to them and now our aim is to find out the culprits", he said.

The minister was replying to questions on the first day of the assembly session after opposition members raised a furore over the culprits engaged in the attack on Nath in a Karimganj hotel last month.

The state government had on July 12 constituted an inquiry commission by additional chief secretary PP Verma to probe the attack. He was asked to submit the report within 15 days.

The Commission would also inquire into the circumstances leading to the attack and also into lapses, if any, by the authorities concerned.

The MLA from Borkhola in Cachar district and her second husband were attacked and injured by a mob, who were allegedly irked over her second marriage to a member of the minority community without divorcing her first husband, in a Karimganj hotel.

Nath and Zakir were later brought to Guwahati for treatment and lodged at the MLA hostel here amidst tight security.

The attack led to widespread violence in Barak Valley.
