RSS to start giving India's own 'Nobel Prize' from next month

The awards will have categories like Peace, Human Rights, Literature, Visual and Performing Arts, Science, Education and others

Calling it India's own Nobel Prize, the cultural unit of RSS, with a go ahead from the Ministry of Culture is all set to introduce awards in the field of Arts, Culture and Literature– Naimishya Samman.

A grand extravaganza in the form of Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsava, will be held in Varanasi next month, to kickstart the first edition of the awards. The jury for it will comprise of prominent International and Indian artists like Sonal Mansingh. The budget for the Banaras extrvaganza has been fixed at around Rs 220 crore, out of which around Rs70 crore have been kept for the awards and the rest for the event, sources said.

The Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsava, which is an initiative of the Ministry of Culture is currently going on in the national capital and its other editions will be held in Bangalore, Jammu and Kashmir apart from the one in Varanasi. "The Sanskriti Mahotsava will be held each year now. It is a confluence or arts and culture, where in, we try to bring together artists from remote places to showcase their talent," said a senior official with Ministry of Culture.

The one in Varanasi, however is going to be different from the rest as it will see an assembly of scholars and artists from all over India where they will be honored.

The cultural unit of RSS – Sanskar Bharti is behind the introduction of idea of this award. "The idea was proposed to the Ministry of Culture by us. We thought that Indians working in the field of arts, culture and literature should also get their due. Why should the great Indian writers wait to win a Nobel Prize, we should honor them with our own award that is equally respectable," theatre and cultural coordinator for Sanskar Bharti, Shailesh Shrivastava told DNA.

The awards will have categories like Peace, Human Rights, Literature, Visual and Performing Arts, Science, Education and others.

The awards have been slated to be an annual affair, starting from November this year.
