After the BJP’s massive victory in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, the party’s ideological mentor, the RSS, seems all set to prepare the ground for the saffron party in West Bengal, where it had made significant electoral gains in the Lok Sabha polls in 2014 and the Assembly elections last year.

In a meeting here of its highest decision-making body, Akhil Bharatiya Pratinidhi Sabha, the RSS passed a resolution, ‘Growing Jihadi Activities in West Bengal — a Challenge to National Interests’, alleging that the population of Hindus in the state has reduced by 8 per cent since 1951, and the organisation’s leaders expressed their concern over the ‘unabated rise in violence’ by Jihadi elements against Hindus in West Bengal.

According to the resolution, the Hindu population in the state, which constituted 78.45 per cent in the 1951 census, has declined to 70.54 per cent as per the 2011 census. “At the time of partition, the Hindu majority area of Bengal came to exist as West Bengal. Thereafter, due to the continuous persecution and atrocities in East Pakistan, or present Bangladesh, a large number of Hindus were forced to seek refuge in West Bengal. It is surprising that despite the large influx of Hindus displaced from Bangladesh to West Bengal, the Hindu population there has declined. This is a matter of serious concern for the unity and integrity of the country,” the resolution said.

The joint general secretary of the RSS, Dattatreya Hosabale, said that there had been an increase in Jihadi attacks under the patronage and support of the state administration. “There are several incidents of Hindus having been targeted by Jihadi elements and fundamentalist forces. On several occasions, the state and police turned a blind eye towards protecting the citizens,” he said.
