An annual affair for the past eight years, the Anuradha Ghandy Memorial Lecture might not see the light of day this year. An RSS-affiliated legal organisation has lodged a complaint with Mumbai police commissioner against the lecture that is held in the memory of the underground Maoist women's organiser Anuradha Ghandy, wife of well-known jailed Maoist Kobad Ghandy. The lecture has been dubbed as "urban front of armed militants groups".

The complaint, lodged by the Legal rights Observatory (LRO) led by former RSS pracharak Vinay Joshi, alleged that Maoists were trying to afflict urban areas by their ideology using such over-ground activities.

Sources told DNA that an intervention from the government was most likely expected as the complainants had apprised the Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC) of the matter and that the issue would be further escalated to the Home Secretary.

"Such events and the ideology of violence that they represent are against the fabric of the nation. They must be stopped at any cost. We will be forced to raise the matter with the National Security Advisor if it is not stopped. Naxals come at such events and spew venom against the country and the security forces," said Joshi, the national convenor of LRO.

"By arranging such programmes, Maoists are trying their best to garner support of more and more civilians for their bloody war against the Indian state. So allowing such programmes to happen would be a highly objectionable thing. With this letter, we request you to immediately ban this programme and register FIR against organisers of the programme...under UAPA and MCOCA provisions," the complaint read.

The right-wing has threatened the Mumbai Police with escalating the matter to the Union Home Ministry as well as the PMO if permission to the meet was not rescinded by 10 am today.

The complaint warned the police that "if no visible and immediate action is taken against organisers of the programme, we would be forced to take legal counter-measures against Police and Civilian authorities for not taking appropriate action against spread of militant ideologies."

Noted Naxal ideologues such as Varavara Rao and Tilak Dasgupta are to address the lecture that is considered an above-ground meeting of underground Naxal organisations.

Moreover, the case with the venue of the lecture, Mumbai Marathi Patrakar Sangh, as listed on the Facebook page of the event, is also a curious one. While the event page is clear about the venue, when DNA called the Sangh, they said they had not been booked for any such event.
