After making inroads into school education, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is looking to strengthen its grip on higher education.

The RSS currently has a wing — Shiksha Bharti — that suggests policy decisions related to school education to the central government. The party is now looking to have a separate wing that will suggest policy decisions related to higher education institutions, both technical and non-technical.

According to RSS sources, the decision to set up a separate wing for higher education was taken at a recently held national teacher's conference organised in Delhi's Rohini area in March.

The meeting was attended by a number of professors from various universities across the country, including the Delhi University and Banaras Hindu University, among others.

The meeting was presided over by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, called for a focus on how to include a more 'nationalist narrative' and Indian perspective in higher education. The participants also discussed "how the current education system is taking students back to the colonial era". He asked for a way to reverse the trend.

The new education wing for higher education, when constituted, would advice the government on key policy decisions and construction of new buildings for institutions. However, no name has been chosen for the new wing.

"The responsibilities of the new wing will be carried out initially under the Sangh. We plan to assign a name to the wing later," said a source who is closely associated with the new initiative.

RSS leaders working in the education field have been conducting meetings with the VCs of various universities to chalk out a comprehensive plan with regard to the new wing. The ABVP, the student wing of the RSS, is also likely to be part of the plan.
