With an idea to expand its presence in Jammu and Kashmir and the Ladakh region, the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) is going to conduct its annual review meeting in Jammu for the first time.

The review meeting of pant pracharaks is an annual affair conducted to take stock of the year gone by. RSS sources pointed out that by holding this meeting in Jammu this year, the Sangh is looking to send out a message to separatists that Kashmir is an integral part of the country.

Attacks on CRPF jawans and stone-pelting in the valley are also likely to be discussed at the meeting. Sources added that RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, BJP president Amit Shah and VHP leaders will attend the three-day meeting, which is scheduled from July 18-20.

Manmohan Vaidya, the Akhil Bharatiya Prachar Pramukh of the RSS, told DNA: "Our annual review meeting is held in July every year but the venue changes, and it will be in Jammu this year. It is just a review meeting where we will hold discussions about the various camps that were organised by the Sangh and its other activities. It is not a decision-making meeting."

Sources hinted that incidents of stone-pelting and attack on CRPF jawans in the valley will be points of discussion in the meeting, which was not completely denied by Vaidya.

"Whatever is the current situation in the country and the region is discussed in the meeting. If stone-pelting has happened in the Kashmir valley and it is a cause of concern, it will be discussed," Vaidya added.

However, he also added that speculations should not be drawn from the choice of venue. "The Jammu office of RSS has expanded in the last few years and this time the workers volunteered that meeting happens there, so we agreed to it," he said.

Analysis

The BJP allying with the PDP to form the government in J&K has meant that the RSS will find it easier to gain a foothold in Jammu.
But it’s highly unlikely that RSS will spread its ideology in Srinagar any time soon.
