The Centre has grown concerned about the rules allowing the Lok Sabha MPs to get transit accommodation in state run luxury hotels after their hotel bill for totaled to a whooping Rs 35 crore, a Hindustan Times report said.

Since April 6, 2014, at least 35 MPs were put up in The Ashok Hotel as they were yet to be put in government houses. The number of MPs residing at the hotel had gone higher around the time of Lok Sabha election in May 2014,
As per the rules of the Lok Sabha House Commmittee says the MPs have to be accommodated in a temporary lodging until the house provided to him/her has been certified as 'habitable' by CWPD. However the MPs reside in luxury hotel even when the Parliament is not in session and the suites and rooms are either accommodated by their staff or acquaintances, the report added.
The report also mentions that most of the 35 MPs have not been able to move in to the houses provided to them due to the renovation work. Some have even asked for a bigger house. The Urban Development ministry will have to pick up the Rs 35 crore tab for their stay.
With the cost of lodging the legislators in luxury hotels for over a year running so high, the government has wished to change the rules of the Committee. In a cabinet committee meeting on accommodation that took place in April, Urban Development Minister reportedly demanded to know why his ministry has to pay for the MPs accommodation when the Parliament is not in session. The cost for a suite in a state run luxury hotel comes to at least Rs 12,000 and a room Rs 9,000.
Lok Sabha House Committee Chairman Arjun Ram Meghwal has responded to Naidu's request saying the rules are being looked into adding that there is no cap over the time period for transit accommodation of the legislators, the report said, the report said.
