The upgradation of the National Registry of Citizen, specific to Assam, has been going on for the last few years
The Cabinet on Wednesday approved Rs 1,220.93 crore for the process of the upgradation of the National Register of Citizens in Assam. The approval, made by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi came on Wednesday, is approved for a period till December, 2018.
The upgradation of the NRC, specific to over 3.29 crore applicants in Assam, has been going on for the last few years, and while a draft NRC was published on December 31, 2017, which included 1.90 crore people from the state as citizens of India, the Supreme Court has directed the government to publish the final list by December 31, 2018.
The upgradation of the NRC, a requisite of the Assam Accord and an understanding arrived in a tripartite meeting held in 2005, arose after years of unrest in the state over unchecked immigration of undocumented individuals from Bangladesh.
“The National Register of Citizens, Assam will contain the names of genuine Indian citizens and will help the government to check illegal immigration in India,” said a government release.
The NRC, updated as per the provisions of the Citizenship Act, 1955, and the Citizenship (Registration of Citizens and Issue of National Identity Cards) Rules, 2003, will include the names of people and their descendents whose names appear in any of the electoral rolls up to the midnight of March 24, 1971 or in the 1951 NRC.
