Rs 10.5 lakh: This is how much K'taka spent on hotel stay of Chandrababu Naidu, Kejriwal for Kumaraswamy's swearing-in

Karnataka government spent Rs 42 lakh of taxpayers money to accommodate opposition leaders that had gathered during the swearing-in ceremony of Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on May 23. 

According to a report by Bangalore Mirror, the highest amount was spent on the hospitality of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu who ran up a bill of a whopping Rs Rs 8,72,485. The bill for his Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal was at Rs 1,85,287 including in-room dining, food/juices of Rs 71,025 and 5,000 for beverages, the report said.

Karnataka's State Hospitality Organisation spent Rs 37,53,536 to provide accommodation and food to leaders. A battery of opposition leaders had attended the swearing-in ceremony and had stayed at two five star hotels — Taj West End and Shangri La — in Bengaluru on May 23 and 24. 

Besides, the government spent Rs 4,35,001 on hi-tea buffet organized at Vidhana Soudha Banquet Hall on May 23, the day of the oath-taking ceremony. 

In a spectacle showing Opposition unity, a bevy of leaders, from UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Congress chief Rahul Gandhi to NCP's Sharad Pawar, from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to her arch-rival CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury, attended Kumaraswamy's swearing-in ceremony on May 23. 

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, BSP supremo Mayawati, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, RJD supremo Lalu Prasad's son Tejashwi Yadav, former Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren of JMM, DMK chief M Karunanidhi's MP daughter Kanimozhi, and RLD leader Ajit Singh were among those present.

While the State Hospitality Organisation did not provide details on the money spent on Ms Banerjee, Akhilesh Yadav and Mayawati ran up bills of Rs 1.02 lakh and Rs 1.41 lakh, respectively.

Vijayan, actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan and Congress leader Ashok Gehlot ran up bills of Rs 1.02 lakh each. Rs 64,000 was spent on Yechury and Sharad Pawar each.

Hemant Soren and All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi’s stay in Bengaluru cost Rs 38,400 each.

According to the report, the Karnataka government had not spent any money to provide for the accommodation of guests during swearing-in ceremonies of Siddaramaiah and BS Yeddyurappa on May 13, 2013 and  May 17, 2018 respectively.
