Deoband Ulema Mufti Asad Kasmi sparks controversy over TMC MP Nusrat Jahan on sporting vermilion and mangalsutra inside Parliament during her oath ceremony.

Kasmi said, "As per Islam, only a Muslim can marry a Muslim and nobody else whereas Jahan recently married a person named Nikhil Jain hailing from Jain community."

He also stated that religion has no importance in the life of actors and called such practices un-Islamic.

On the other hand, Sadhvi Prachi slammed the cleric for his statement and welcomed Jahan into her community.

Prachi said, "What happens in love jihad when a Muslim man elopes with a Hindu girl? Isnt it 'Haraam?'"

Prachi further said this is a good thing. "A woman like Jahan shall come into our community because their future is secure in our religion. She understands that the Hindu religion respects women," she told the media in Muzaffarnagar.

Debashree Chaudhuri, BJP MP from Raiganj has also strictly condemned the statement from the Mufti. She said that this is not Pakistan, this is India. "It is the right of every people to disclose his/her identity, religion as it is a constitutional right. No fatwa should be given in this regard," Debashree added further.

Jahan has also come out with her statement on the Fatwa being issued against her. She said, "I represent an inclusive India which is beyond the barriers of caste, creed and religion. As much as I respect all religions, I still remain a Muslim and no one should comment on what I choose to wear. Faith is beyond attire and is more about believing and practicing the invaluable doctrines of all religions."

Jahan took the political plunge in this year's Lok Sabha elections and won the Basirhat seat with huge margins against BJP candidate Sayantan Basu.
