A major political storm has hit Jammu and Kashmir after National Conference (NC) revived and recited a 1952 song in the party meeting at Baramulla.

Lehra aey Kashmir Ke Jhande.... (Let the flag of Kashmir flutter...)” was being played at the convention while party cadre cheered and clapped, and leaders including the district president stood up in the rapt attention.
J&K BJP reacted sharply demanded action against those who recited this song saying there can’t be any parallel to national anthem.

“This is absolutely anti-national thing. It should not have been done. If it is done, strong action should be taken. You cannot have something which is parallel to national anthem. You cannot create such situation where national anthem is compromised,” said Sunil Sethi, chief spokesman of state BJP.

Written by Moulana Mohammad Sayeed Masoodi, the song was first sung by Sheikh Mohammed Akbar, the then MLA in the constituent assembly, when motion for state flag was adopted on June 7, 1952.

Officially it was not declared the state song, but it was treated so by some leaders. Lately, Sheikh Abdul Rasheed aka Engineer Rasheed, an independent MLA from Langate constituency, who now heads Awami Ittihaad Party (AIP), has been organising the annual even to unfurl state flag and recite this song.

“We believe this is our anthem. It dates back to 1952.” said Shameema Firdous, National Conference women wing president.

NC Hailed

Hailing National Conference for reciting this song, Engineer Rasheed said it is better late than never. “I’ve been asking National Conference to rise to the occasion and celebrate this day every year on June 7. They have not heeded to our pleas,” he said.
