AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa on Friday slammed the BJP-led NDA government for following the fuel policy adopted by the previous Congress government and asked it to rollback the increase in fuel prices.

"The Central government is following the wrong fuel policy adopted by the previous Congress government. Due to this, there is an uncertainty in the pricing of essential commodities," Jayalalithaa said in a statement here.

Noting that the Centre did not give benefits to people when international crude oil and fuel prices were at lower levels, she said, "Due to increase in fuel prices, the price of essential commodities will go up, affecting the common man."

"I urge the Centre to rollback today's increase in fuel prices immediately. As I had said several times in the past, I once again request the Centre to withdraw the power given to oil marketing companies to fix the pricing of fuel prices," she said.

Petrol price was today hiked by Rs 3.13 a litre and diesel by Rs 2.71 per litre. The hike, which comes on the back of Rs 3.96 per litre increase in petrol and Rs 2.37 a litre raise in diesel from May 1, will be effective from midnight tonight.
