Police on Sunday claimed to have got some vital clues in connection with the brutal rape and murder of a mentally-challenged woman from Nepal even as different social organisations held a candle light march and staged dharnas here seeking justice for the family of the deceased woman.

Haryana ADGP Law and Order Mohammed Akil today visited the crime spot and held confabulations with the members of the SIT and other senior police officers.

He said police had got "vital clues" in the case and the culprits will soon be arrested.

Saying that the woman went out of her house alone and fell into the wrong hands who committed the "brutal crime", he disclosed without divulging the details that "we have got vital clues and soon we will arrest the culprits".

Meanwhile, the protesters gathered in Mansarovar Park here with burning candles as mark of protest and demanded justice for the family of the deceased at the earliest.

They also staged a dharna on the road in front of Bapu park in the city.

A 28-year-old mentally-challenged woman from Nepal was brutally raped and murdered and her body dumped in a field at a village on the Rohtak-Hisar highway here.

The deceased had been residing with her sister for the past three months and was undergoing treatment at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS) here.

The victim's sister had lodged a complaint with police on February 1 and on February 4, the woman's body was recovered from the fields in Akbarpur village with several injury marks on it, Rohtak Superintendent of Police Shashank Anand had said.

Haryana police had announced a cash reward of Rs one lakh for information leading to the arrest of accused, officials had said.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to crack the case, the SP said.

The post mortem report of the woman mentioned several injuries on her private parts, doctors of PGIMS said, adding that stones and blades were also found in her body.

Meanwhile, Kiran Choudhry, Leader of the Congress Legislature Party in Haryana, strongly condemned the BJP government, led by Manohar Lal Khattar, for the "despicable gang-rape and brutal murder" of the mentally challenged woman and flayed police for its alleged inaction and inability to nab the culprits.

"The law-and-order situation in Haryana had gone from bad to worse with spurt in the number of rape cases, abductions and extortions across the state. Looks, things are slipping out of the hands of the state administration," she said in Chandigarh.

"The heinous crime has earned Haryana the infamy of Nirbhaya-type incident involving a helpless and mentally challenged woman and sent shockwaves across the state," she said.

She said though the heinous and gruesome crime was committed a week ago, the SIT, constituted by the police, is yet to snoop down on the culprits who are still at large. It is time the BJP government woke up from its deep slumber and acted to protect people's life and limbs, she demanded.

The culprits should be arrested immediately, tried in a fast-track court and sent to the gallows, she said, adding that no punishment less than death would satisfy the society.
