The crisis within the NDA came to the fore on Thursday when Union Minister and Rashtriya Lok Samata Party (RLSP) chief Upendra Kushwaha took to Twitter for a tweet-by-tweet rebuttal of senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi's post in which he had supported Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and denied that he had used the term "neech" for the former.

Kushwaha had alleged that the Bihar CM had called him lowly, a charge denied by the Janata Dal (United). Sushil Modi had come out in his boss's defence and said on November 12, "Nitish Kumar never used the word neech in his interaction with media. I was present in the programme. Still some leaders trying to become martyr but will not succeed."

Replying to it, Kushwaha said, "This seems to be the voice of those who nurture the mentality of the people behind the martyrdom of the Father of the Nation and Bihar's Lenin, Jagdeo Prasad. However, Prasad had said, the first generation will become martyrs and the second will rule. Those who are threatening to martyr me should know that Upendra Kushwaha is of the second generation."

In the second tweet, Kushwaha asked the Deputy CM, "In that case, you should also admit that Nitishji was right even on the DNA issue and the Prime Minister was wrong about it…" He added, "If in your description, Nitishji's words did not mean lowly, then in your opinion was the Prime Minister also wrong in inferring meaning from Mrs Priyanka Gandhi's statements?"

In this tweet he made a reference to the political slugfest between PM Modi and Nitish Kumar over the 'DNA issue' during the 2015 Bihar Assembly polls when the two leaders led rival camps, Kushwaha added that Sushil Kumar Modi should also then say that the Bihar CM was then right and the prime minister was wrong.

Kumar had built a campaign against the prime minister over his DNA barb at him, asking his partymen to collect samples of hair and nail to be sent to Delhi for DNA test.

In a separate tweet on Thursday evening, Kushwaha said, "I am leaving for Delhi right now (Friday). Tomorrow I will try to meet BJP President Amit Shah and discuss the seat sharing in Bihar". This indicates that all was not well between the allies though the relations were not completely severed yet.

The RLSP has been at loggerheads with allies over the last several months and the situation only worsened over seat sharing issue for Bihar in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

To Meet Amit Shah

  • In a separate tweet on Thursday evening, Kushwaha said, “I am leaving for Delhi right now (Friday). Tomorrow I will try to meet BJP President Amit Shah and discuss the seat sharing in Bihar”.
  • The RLSP has been seemingly unhappy with the seat sharing formula for Bihar in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
