Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi on Sunday got a shot in arm with RJD MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav defending his recent statement against doctors.

Yadav said the chief minister had spoken rightly though Manjhi had himself retracted from his 'chopping the hands of doctors' comment made at the inauguration of a hospital at Motihari last week.

"Being in a constitutional post the Chief Minister should speak in a guarded manner, but what he said about doctors who are irresponsible towards their duty was in the right context," Yadav told reporters in Patna.

The deficiencies in the governing system would have to be accepted and tackled by the people holding constitutional posts and Manjhi was doing just that, he said.

"The Chief Minister had frankly conveyed his opinion on the faults in the government system on earlier occasions too and this time also he used the Hindi proverb for irresponsible doctors. Manjhi has the right to suspend or dismiss such doctors, and his statement should be considered in this context," Yadav said.

He alleged that 60% of the doctors practicing in Bihar have fake degrees and 80% private hospitals were not following the provisions of the Clinical Establishments Act, he sought strong action against them by the chief minister.

Pooh-poohing the demand by Indian Medical Association and Bihar Health Services Association for an apology by Manjhi for the statement, he said "Shall the Chief Minister apologies to doctors who do injustice to poor people? The demand is irresponsible and illegal. Manjhi has taken the right step by taking action against doctors who did not discharge their duty in Patna Medical College and Hospital."

Yadav, a Lok Sabha member from Madhepura constituency has been in the limelight recently for calling doctors "flesh eating devils" and "executioners" and asking them to reduce their fees and laboratory test charges, especially for the poor.
