RJD, JD(U) spar as BJP's charges stick

Senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi's 'benami property' allegations against Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) president Lalu Prasad and his family is causing a ripple effect in the state politics and ruling Mahagathbandhan, with alliance partner JD(U) refusing to defend the Yadav clan in the 'land deals'.

While the RJD functionaries are unhappy over being left 'alone' to reply to the attacks by Modi, almost everyday, the JD(U) leaders are now claiming that they cannot defend Laluji as they have no documentary evidence to support their claims.

On Sunday, JD(U) national general secretary and Rajya Sabha MP RCP Singh said that it was the responsibility of the person against whom the allegations were made, to defend himself. This did not go down well with the RJD members who said they did not need anyone else to defend their leader.

"RCP Singh was a corrupt bureaucrat. He will be in problem if his cases are opened," RJD MLA Bhai Virendra retaliated. "People have voted for RJD, but the JD-U is ruling. This will not do," he added.

JD(U) spokesperson Sanjay Singh paid Virendra back in the same coin, calling him a snake's hatchling. "None of our leaders have ever made any statement against Laluji. But, they have always targeted our CM or the government's functioning. The RJD should expel such leaders from the party before they do much damage," Singh said.

...& ANALYSIS

Not the first time

Allies RJD and JD(U) have been sparring since their grand alliance took charge of helm of affairs in Bihar on November 20, 2015.

Lalu's tainted image

CM Nitish Kumar is wary of Lalu Prasad's tainted image. Also, it was the JD(U) that had first raised charges of Lalu's land scam in 2008.

New battle lines

With no documentary evidence to the contrary, JD(U) leaders do not want to spoil Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's 'clean image' by siding with Lalu.
