The special round of admissions held for the government funded technical institutes including NITs and IIITs went awry with the allocation board having to recall the allotment result, a leading English daily reported. The allotments will be revised and put up by 12 pm on Thursday.

The Central Seat Allocation Board was to allot seats to around 5,000 students on August 17. However, on the night of the same day the Board received over a 1000 complaints that students had they had been assigned lower seats reportedly caused by a technical problem.

The allotment round had 1.5 lakh apirants vying for 5500 seats in central institutes. While 2300 students had come for new registrations, the rest had gone through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority, with many getting admissions. The report says the problem occurred because the HRD ministry opened the special round to all students and not just ones without seats.

According to the report, the allotment board attributed to the problem to wrongly chose options by the students. Students choosing to modify their choices, had to choose the 'float' option while students wanting better courses in the same institute needed to chose the option 'slide'. But when they clicked on 'modify choices' their choice was automatically changed.

The board has now sought to resolve this problem by asking students to re-submit their choice.

The 'slide' option is for those who want to stay in the same institute but opt for a better course. The 'float' option is for students who want to change institutes. The 'freeze' option is to keep their seat locked.
