Revellers clash with policemen, six vehicles torched in Bihar

Revellers carrying idols of Goddess Durga for immersion clashed with policemen here and torched six vehicles today when they were prevented from playing loud music.

District Magistrate Kundan Kumar said the revellers were dancing on the road to loud music when the police stopped them for not obtaining the required licence from the authorities.

When the police asked them to go about the immersion in a peaceful manner in view of Eid today, the angry revellers clashed with them and torched an excavator machine belonging to the town civic body. The revellers also barged into a nearby BSNL premises and torched five more vehicles parked there and threw bricks and stones at the policemen, who resorted to lathicharge and dispersed them.

The policemen then seized the idols and took them to Town police station from where they were later taken to Rajendra Sarovar for immersion, Kumar said.

In the meantime, additional reinforcements of police and ITBP jawans were rushed to the spot and anti-riot vehicles conducted flag march in the town to bring the law and order situation under control.

The DM said all revellers were dispersed and there has been no major injury to any revellers or policemen during brickbatting and the situation was under control as of now.

Kumar said he along with Tirhut Zone Inspector General Paras Nath, Saran superintendent of police Vinay Kumar were camping at the spot to monitor the situation.
