A major row has erupted after Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani called for curtailing the duration of annual Amarnath yatra to one month for"safety" of pilgrims and protection of environment.

"We advise the government to restrict the yatra to one month like Uttarakhand-Gangotri yatra time table. It will be safe for the pilgrims as well as the environment," Geelani said addressing a public rally in Tral, 35 kms from here, in Pulwama district.

This year, the yatra to the holy cave shrine will be for 58 days from July 2.

While saffron groups want an extended duration of yatra, the separatists have been demanding shorter version of pilgrimage to Himalayas much to the discomfort of the people in Jammu.

Last year over 3.72 lakh Yatris paid their obeisance at the holy cave shrine which had commenced on June 28 from the Baltal route and on July 2 from the Pahalgam route and concluded on August 10.

Hurriyat hawk's statement evoked sharp reaction from the saffron groups who have asked him to stop meddling into their religious affairs. "Who is Geelani? He should shut up. He has no right to meddle in our religious affairs and yatra. It would have been apt that he should have welcomed yatris and revive Kashmiryat", said Rama Kant Dubey, patron of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, state unit.
