The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) of south-east Delhi, in collaboration with the National Defence Response Force (NDRF), is currently organising training sessions in schools to educate students about how to react in the face of natural disasters.

The programme, which is being conducted in 10-12 schools for Class VI-XII students, includes measures to be adopted during earthquakes, fire, and floods.

"We are teaching students not to panic during natural disasters because such incidents cannot be avoided. Training, however, can be imparted to have an appropriate reaction to these situations," said Jugbir Singh, Project Coordinator, DDMA (south-east).

In addition, mock drills are also being conducted in schools. "A demo is given to students, depicting various situations, such as fire, quake, and flood. We teach students how to rescue those trapped under debris, including which part of the body to get hold of while pulling people out. We tell them about the emergency measures needed to be taken and immediate treatment to be given to the injured," NDRF Inspector Parveen Rawat said.

He added: "Most deaths during such times take place due to people getting trampled in stampedes. Students are being taught three ways to stop bleeding in victims. Generally, people put a cloth to stop the bleeding, but once it has absorbed the blood, they throw the cloth away. The right way is to put layer upon layer of wet pieces of cloth. The tourniquet method is also good, which includes tying of cloth on a nerve to stop bleeding."

In addition, teachers are also being taught to recognise signs of an impending disaster and raise an alarm to warn the students.

Archana, a Class X student at the Kautilya Rajkiya Sarvodaya Vidyalaya, said: "We knew about some basic details, but had no idea about all the emergency numbers to contact during such situations. We also got to know about many other important details, such as the right pressure points and angle of elevation to stop bleeding, rushing to corners of a room during an earthquake, and so on."

"We were told to put our bags on our heads to prevent any kind of injury from the falling debris during earthquakes," another student Rahul said.

School Principal CS Verma said: "Since most of these students come from slums, the programme will be really helpful for them as there are more chances of stampedes in congested JJ clusters."

Meanwhile, DDMA, under the chairmanship of District Magistrate BS Jagalan, is also conducting these training sessions and mock drills in malls and movie theatres. Besides, they are also training people about how to save their cattle during floods.

"We are also conducting mock drills at the airport," DDMA coordinator Shikha Sharma said.
