The summer's first heat wave that had vast regions of the country reeling is set to abate soon as rain showers, coupled with favourable winds, will bring the mercury down. While in the past week, clear skies and the absence of any significant weather system led to a rise in mercury, the impact of a Western Disturbance is going to bring down the mercury from the middle of this week, the Met Department said.

The Western Disturbance will cause rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Even, Delhi-National Capital Region is likely to see rainfall due to change in winds, Met officials added.

Over the past week, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Delhi, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh witnessed an early heat wave with day temperatures soaring 5-7 degrees Celsius above normal. Across cities like Akola, Jamshedpur, Nagpur, Gwalior and Ahmedabad, maximum temperatures were consistently above 40 degrees Celsius the past week. The early heat wave also led to three deaths in Maharashtra, a state that does not usually witness heat-related deaths. With the abatement of heat wave, temperatures are now expected to come back near normal.

In Maharashtra, maximum temperatures in several cities across Vidarbha and central Maharashtra still remained over 40 degrees Celsius. On Sunday, however, the temperature in Mumbai reached 38.4 degrees Celsius.

"Mumbaikars can be thankful to the change in wind direction as well as the sea breeze that helped temperatures to drop. On Sunday, the maximum temperature in Colaba was 33 degrees Celsius while Santa Cruz recorded 33.4 degrees Celsius," said an official from the regional IMD office in Mumbai.

Officials said that temperatures across Maharashtra in Vidarbha too will nosedive, but it might take a couple of days. On Sunday, Chandrapur saw a maximum temperature of 44 degrees Celsius, Wardha (43 degrees Celsius), Yavatmal (42.5 degrees Celsius) and Nagpur (42.5 degrees Celsius).
