Talking to reporters after a workshop on "Land Acquisition Ordinance, 2015: Its Adverse Impact on Farmers, Farm Workers and Food Security", organised by Congress' legal and human rights cell here, senior party leader Veerappa Moily termed the ordinance as "anti-farmer" which "kills" the core purpose of UPA's Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013.
"(The government's) aim is to help some vested interests to grab land again. Congress has always fought against these interests. You know these very interests, which are now being represented by BJP and other parties, you know they only opposed our land ceiling act during Indiraji's time... land legislation act, both at the state and national level, I think it is just a repeat game (now)," he said.
Moily alleged the Modi government of "undoing the farmer-friendly act" brought by the UPA. He suggested the government should change the title of the 2013 act removing the words "fair" and "transparent compensation" from it.
"You know it is an anti-farmer bill. Because the act which was passed by UPA government, the 2013 act, its titled is fair compensation, fair and transparent compensation. And the ordinance takes away the entire thing, wipes out the entire thing, the core of the act. Then they should have changed the title," he quipped.
Referring to the ordinance, Moily said that there can't be any provision to grab land in any country. "I don't think that can be an act, any ordinance meant to empower the vested interests to grab the land. I don't think law of any country can empower any person to grab the land.
This is what it has been done," he said. He also demanded a probe by a Supreme Court judge into the suicide by farmer Gajendra Singh in Delhi on Wednesday.
The incident, he said, was a "climax" of agrarian crisis in the country which the NDA government should be ashamed of.
"It is most unfortunate. You know in the Parliament we discussed for hours and days and days together on the agrarian crisis and the (Agriculture) Minister gave reply that should have definitely inspired confidence among farmers.
He also attacked those claiming the incident as being "an accident" saying they were being "insensitive".
"And I think you know this is a matter which has to be properly enquired into. Not only enquired into the one incident of suicide but the entire gamut of farmers' suicides by a Supreme Court judge so that they can come out with a report," he said.
