AHMEDABAD: A number of religious leaders associated with VHP and other organisations on Tuesday demanded the reconstruction of temples razed by the state government in Gandhinagar.

After visiting demolished temple sites in Gandhinagar, saints associated with the VHP and other organisations said that the state government has repeated acts of Mehmood Gazanavi and Talibans. who destroyed large number of temples and Budhist idols in Gujarat and Afghanistan respectively.

In last one month the state government demolished more than 200 "illegal" temples in Gandhinagar.

Following protest by VHP and other saffron organisations, VHP leader Ashok Singhal had called on Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who had subsequently asked the
authorities to stop the demolition drive in the state capital.

A Haridwar based Hansdasji Maharaj, secretary of All India Sadhu Samaj, while visiting the sites said that large number of temples were demolished though they were not on the roads.

"How can any government can decide to demolish over 200 temples which were not even located on the roads?," he asked, adding, "This act of the government shows that it is anti-Hindu government."

Avichaldas Swami of Sarsa Ashram said that the Modi government has done "injustice to Hindu community by demolishing temples."

He even said that Gandhinagar is the parliamentary constituency of BJP's prime minister candidate L K Advani, who had presided over the demolition of Babri mosque.

"Adavaniji should know that this act of the Modi government will have serious consequences during the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls," he added.

It may be noted that Avichaldas was at the forefront of anti-Advani campaign following Advani's remarks on Mohammad Ali Jinah.
