Social activist Swami Agnivesh on Tuesday appealed to President Pranab Mukherjee to recall the Chhattisgarh governor for his "silence and inaction" in the alleged rape case of 11 minor girls in Kanker and rising atrocities against the tribals.

Agnivesh met Mukherjee and handed a letter apprising him about the condition of 11 minor girls who were sexually assaulted in a hostel in Kanker allegedly by a school teacher and a watchman for two years.

In his letter, he sought the President's intervention as "the silence and inaction of Governor Shekhar Dutt and his dereliction of duty under Fifth Schedule of Indian Constitution were making it all the more inhumane and tragic."

The social activist demanded the President to immediately recall the Chhattisgarh Governor and requested him to visit Kanker.

"I went to the President yesterday and when I told him about the girls' condition, he felt very bad. I asked the President to go and himself see the condition so that he can realise their trauma," Agnivesh told reporters.

Agnivesh expressed his anguish over no state or central government officials visiting the place to inquire about the incident.

"During the meeting, the President ensured me that he would raise the issue with the Prime Minister and the home minister," he said.
