Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav might believe that gang rape is "not practical". But, rapists in UP seem to have taken it upon themselves to prove him wrong. As if on cue after the Yadav leader's remarks, a series of horrific rape cases have been reported from different parts of the state, including the state capital of Lucknow, over the past two days.

In the latest case, a group of youngsters abducted a class VIII girl as she was returning from her school on Thursday afternoon, and raped her in a moving car. The assailants allegedly tied a cloth on the girl's eyes and later dumped her at a desolate spot behind the Lucknow University.

The local police at the Hasanganj police station were still bickering with family members over registration of the FIR at the time of going to press.

In another horrific incident, a minor Dalit girl in Fatiyapur village of Hardoi district, about 110 km from here, was killed and her eyes gouged out after being raped by unidentified men on Wednesday. She had gone out to buy medicines for her father but didn't return till late evening.

Police said the rapists had stabbed her private parts, and also her eyes "perhaps to destroy evidence and to prevent her from identifying them later". However, the girl succumbed to the serious injuries and her body was found in a field outside the village.

In Taksimpur village of Vidhnu police station area in Kanpur, miscreants kidnapped a three-year-old girl when her family members were fast asleep on Wednesday night. The child's bloodied body was found in the morning in a nearby field with tell-tale signs of rape.

In Kannauj, represented in Lok Sabha by UP CM Akhilesh Yadav's wife Dimple Yadav, a 15-year-old girl was raped by half-a-dozen people in front of her parents. The assailants had barged into the house for a robbery, police said. They tied up the girls' parents and raped her after looting cash and valuables.

In another brazen crime, a band of criminals abducted a woman and her two daughters from Asoha area of Unnao neighbouring the state capital. They brought them to a house in Lucknow and raped them for a week before the mother escaped on Wednesday and filed a police report after which her daughters were rescued.

In an incident heaping shame on the UP Police, cops in Barkheda police station area of Pilibhit molested a woman who had gone to lodge her report of having been raped. Two cops at the Karod police outpost tried to disrobe her but she managed to escape. The cops have been suspended.
