Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav contested from two seats this Lok Sabha election—Azamgarh and Mainpuri.

In Azamgarh, he defeated former BJP MP Ramakant Yadav by a margin of 63204 votes.

While in Mainpuri, he defeated BJP's SS Chauhan by a whooping margin of 364666 votes. Ramakant Yadav the former sitting MP from Azamgarh had won this seat twice in the past in 1996 and 1999 on a Samajwadi Party ticket while in 2004 he fought on a Bahujan Samajwadi Party ticket.

Ramakant Yadav is confident of winning the bypolls in Mainpuri and recently told the Indian Express, "I will surely win from Mainpuri, as locals are now against Mulayam. Caste equations and negative reaction of the locals on Mulayam’s plan to vacate the seat will work in my favour.”
