Ramadan begins today; PM Modi greets Muslims, hopes for deeper bonds

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday greeted the Muslim community on the beginning of Ramzan and hoped the holy month deepens the bond of brotherhood and the spirit of harmony in society

"As the holy month of Ramzan commences, I convey my greetings to the Muslim community," he said. "May Ramzan deepen the bond of brotherhood and the spirit of harmony in our society", he said.

The Muslim holy month of Ramadan has begun across the country from Tuesday. The Ruyat-e-Hilal (moon sighting) committee announced the sighting of moon last evening. The worshipers thronged mosques last night to offer special night prayer called Traweeh, which will continue throughout the month.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. In Kerala, Tuesday is second day of holy month of Ramadan. Ramadan began across Gulf countries on Monday. The believers observe fast and join mass prayers held at mosques across the state during the period. This annual observance is regarded as one of the five pillars of Islam.

The Prime Minister is currently in the US as part of his five-nation tour.
