Chowdhury, who is deputy Commissioner of police, West Bengal (HQ) suffered a serious hand injury when a bomb detonated in front of him during Ram Navami clashes in Raniganj, on Monday. Chowdhury and 4 other police officers were injured after 1 person was killed in clashes between two communities in the area.

Most people on social media thought that Chowdhury's hand will be amputated after seeing the image that went viral. However, all may not be lost for Chowdhury. He already had a surgery in a private hospital, in Durgapur, West Bengal on Monday. Now, doctors of Coimbatore hospital are keeping him under observation where series of reconstructive surgeries are scheduled to take place.

According to the report, Chowdhury was rushed to the Durgapur hospital within the 'golden hour'. Doctors did surgical procedure to fix fractured bones, remove dead tissues. However a supra major reconstructive procedure was needed, and hence he was shifted to the Tamil Nadu hospital. The initial surgery took three hours and doctors are not ruling out him getting back use of hand function. However, many round of surgeries and physiotherapy will be needed according to the doctors.

Raja Sabapathy, director and head of the department of plastic and reconstructive surgery  of the super speciality is quoted by Mid Day as saying, " The patient's general condition is stable, but his right forearm has severe fractures, which first need to be aligned and a reconstructive procedure will be required to restore the damaged muscle and skin,"

It will take around six-seven weeks after first surgery to check for signs of recovery.
