A day after Section 144 was lifted off the riot-hit areas of Asansol, life was limping back to normal.

While more children were seen on the streets, almost all shops and business units were functional, too. Vehicles were plying normally and the number of police posted at different pockets also had been brought down.

RK Verma, who owns a jewellery shop in a Muslim mohallah, told DNA on Tuesday that he had downed the shutters of his shop through the flare up. "I will re-open my shop this evening. I invcurred some loss in business, but thankfully emerged unharmed. People conceded to the Imam's call for peace and didn't spread any more violence," he said.

Vijay Thakur, a barber, too, opened his shop after five days. "I stay in Chandmari, where my house was damaged. I was more concerned about the security of my family. Now that things have settled down, I have reopened my shop," he said. Thakur added that he has never seen such an incident erupt when the CPIM was in power. "The MP at that time was Bansa Gopal Chowdhury, who used to deal with situations like these with much expertise," he said.

Md Imran, who runs a stove repair shop at Asansol Market, said that it was the common people who suffered during these trying times. "We are poor people who suffer even if business shuts for a day. People of all communities come to my shop to repair stoves and buy spare parts. I am happy that we are past the troubles now," he said.

Asansol Mayor Jitendra Nath Tiwari said that they would provide a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of those killed in the violence. "Police are yet to come out with the list of the dead and once they do we will give Rs 2 lakh to each family. Meanwhile, an initial amount of Rs 10,000 will be given to each of those whose homes and shops were been damaged. We might give more money to them later," Tiwari said.

Superintendent of police of the district, LM Meena, said that although curfew has been lifted, internet service are yet to be restored. It is likely to continue till Wednesday at least and then police will take a call.

A peace rally was taken out on Monday from Asansol Ashram Crossing to Girijapara Crossing. Leaders of different religions partook in it, sending a message of peace and harmony.
