Ram Madhav meets J&K Governor amid poll boycott announced by NC, PDP

An official spokesman said Ram Madhav discussed with Governor several matters relating to ensuring equitable development in the state and shared his party’s views about upcoming elections to Urban Local Bodies and Panchayats in the State.

 Amid poll boycott announced by National Conference and People's Democratic Party, National General Secretary of BJP Ram Madhav met Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik and discussed the Urban Local Bodies and Panchayat polls in the State.

An official spokesman said Ram Madhav discussed with Governor several matters relating to ensuring equitable development in the state and shared his party’s views about upcoming elections to Urban Local Bodies and Panchayats in the State.

“Governor and Madhav discussed about the importance of these polls for strengthening democratic institutions at grass root level and enabling people to directly associate with development of their towns and village”, the spokesman said.

The meeting comes a day after Mehbooba Mufti led People's Democratic Party (PDP) emulated National Conference and decided to boycott forthcoming Panchayat and Municipal polls in the Jammu and Kashmir.

Elections to Municipal Bodies will be conducted in four phases with polling dates between October 1 to October 5, 2018. Similarly, elections to Panchayats will be conducted in eight phases with polling dates between November 8 and December 4, 2018.

Panchayat polls are being held in Jammu and Kashmir after two-year delay. Panchayat elections were last held in 2011 after 33 years hiatus in Jammu and Kashmir. More than 80 per cent people had defied militants and cast their votes in the Panchayat elections in 2011. More than 33000 Panchayat representatives were elected in the polls across the state in 2011

Last municipal polls in Jammu and Kashmir were held in 2005 for the term of five years term. There are 47 Municipal Council/Committees in Kashmir division and 37 in Jammu division. Municipal Corporation of Srinagar has 73 wards while as Municipal Corporation of Jammu consists of 71 wards. There are three Municipal Councils each in Kashmir and Jammu divisions.

“Panchayat and urban local bodies’ elections are on. Decision was taken in July. Urban local bodies’ voter list draft has been  published and finalized. Delimitation and reservation of constituencies has also been completed... CEO will first notify for urban bodies. Within a week you will actual see entire thing”, said BVR Subrahmanyam, J&K chief secretary.
