More than 6,000 students from various colleges today participated in a rally, organised for the first time in the state to create awareness about eradicating 'Seemai Karuvelam' trees in the city.

Madras High Court judge Justice N.Kirubakaran inaugurated the rally.

Seemai karuvelam caused extensive damage to the environment by invading agressively, polluting the atmosphere and causing damage to the ground water, the rallyists said.

The high court had ordered the government to uproot and totally eradicate the karuvelam trees.
