Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore has called upon the media to play a constructive role as the fourth pillar of democracy.

He said that the media should disseminate news about welfare schemes and programmes of the government on a large scale so that maximum number of people can avail the benefits.

Speaking at programme here, Rathore said that the media, while pointing out shortcomings of the government, should also highlight good works done by it and welfare programmes.

"It is also the responsibility of the media to inform and aware people on various schemes and programmes of the government," he said at the programme on Saturday.

On Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visits abroad, Rathore said this has helped in boosting goodwill of India in international fora and that India is now seen as an "important country" in the globe.

Speaking at an award ceremony, Rathore said that the government is focusing on simplification of rules for those who produce films in the country.

He said that a single window system would also be introduced for providing different permission.
