Congress candidates Jairam Ramesh and Oscar Fernandes on Monday filed nomination papers for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election that is scheduled to be held on June 11.

The third candidate supported by Congress, KC Ramamurthy, a retired police officer and educationist, is expected to file nomination papers on Tuesday. Thanking Congress high command for nominating him to Rajya Sabha, Oscar Fernandes said that he was confident getting elected to Rajya Sabha without any hassles.

On BJP’s dream of  'Congress free India' and 'Congress free Karnataka', Fernandes said that BJP leaders are daydreaming but Congress leaders know what they have to do in this regard. “BJP leaders should not forget their defeat in the recent Assembly elections in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal,’’ he said.

BJP candidate to Rajya Sabha, Union Minister Nirmala Seetharaman is expected to file her nomination papers on Tuesday along with BJP candidate for the Karnataka Legislative Council.

Meanwhile, JD(S) has decided to nominate B M Farooq, a real estate developer, to Rajya Sabha. It may be recalled that JD(S) had nominated liquor baron Vijay Mallya who resigned after his passport cancelled by the Ministry of External Affairs. Mallya is facing investigation on the default of Rs 9,000 crore worth bank loans and financial irregularities. Prior to this, JD(S) had nominated M A M Ramaswamy to Rajya Sabha.

There are four vacant Rajya Sabha seats from Karnataka. Based on the strength in the State Assembly, the ruling Congress can easily win two seats, BJP one seat and the JD(S) can get one seat with the support of five or six independent MLAs. Meanwhile, five dissidents MLAs of JD(S) have decided to support the third candidate of Congress candidate K C Ramamurthy.
